Wrought Metal Treasures from the Blum Collection
Ongoing
Sixth Floor, Library & Archives foyer, History Center
This collection of ornate metalwork comes from a Pittsburgh manufacturer known as Blumcraft, previously known as the Hyman Blum Company and Star Ornamental Iron and Wire Company.
Hyman Blum founded the business in 1908, making cellar doors and fire escapes before moving onto crafting decorative items from iron and aluminum. The exhibit features an oak door covered with a massive decorative hinge, a velvet-lined etched aluminum box commissioned by Alcoa to hold that company's earliest globules of aluminum, firescreens, railings and more.
