Permanent Exhibit
Fourth Floor
With the opening of the Special Collections gallery in the History Center's Smithsonian wing, visitors have the opportunity to see, for the first time, a large variety of artifacts that have been in museum storage.
This 10,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art open storage gallery highlights artifacts that document the rich heritage that many ethnic groups have brought to Western Pennsylvania, such as Irish American, Carpatho-Rusyn, African American and many more.
Artifacts from local businesses and corporations such as Alcoa, H.J. Heinz, Westinghouse, Mellon Financial and more also are on display.

MP3 Audio devices describe the collections, often in a first-person format, using Pittsburgh personalities to help tell the stories. Workstations enable visitors and researchers to study specific artifacts, and computers are available for visitors to learn more about selected items.
A large window inside the collections management area allows visitors to observe museum staff preparing and conserving artifacts for exhibits.
