Exhibits - Points In Time: Building a Life in Western Pennsylvania, 1750 - Today

Permanent Exhibit
Second Floor

Long before Western Pennsylvania was known as a center of industry, it was known as a critical gateway to the West.

Points in Time covers Western Pennsylvania's history from the 1750s to modern times. Follow the region's development through its people from Native Americans to pioneers, immigrants, steelworkers, entrepreneurs and suburban families, and see how they lived.

Partial reconstructions of three dwellings, a 1790 log house, a 1910 steelworker's home and a 1950's suburban house, anchor the exhibit, which also features interactives and more than 1,000 artifacts, photographs and documents.

"Journey to Freedom: The Underground Railroad" is a self-guided tour within Points in Time that tells the story of the African American struggle for freedom, covering slavery, abolition, discrimination and desegregation.

Extra: A 124-page book, also titled Points In Time: Building a Life in Western Pennsylvania, is available in the Museum Shop and new History Center E-Store.
