Exhibits - Clash of Empires
Now held over through April 23, 2006!

May 1, 2005 through April 23, 2006
First Floor

Clash of Empires: The British, French & Indian War, 1754-1763 presents the dramatic, wide-ranging story of the French & Indian War and its impact as the turning point in American history.

Clash of Empires is the first and only comprehensive exhibit on the French & Indian War, featuring an unprecedented collection of nearly 300 rare artifacts and period paintings from Europe, Canada and the U.S.

The exhibit tells the story of the war that gave 22-year-old George Washington his first taste of military experience right here in Western Pennsylvania and set the American colonists on the road to revolution.

Featured in the exhibit are nine evocative models that allow visitors to come face-to-face with history. These amazingly life-like models represent the war's most fascinating characters, including Seneca leader Tanaghrisson (left); an angry French officer burning his own flag (below left); and a distraught young George Washington after he signed the Treaty of Fort Necessity.

Following its premiere at the History Center, Clash of Empires will travel to the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C. Click on the links below to learn more about what Winston Churchill called "the first world war."
